Vivienne Westwood is ready for takeoff. The legendary British designer has linked arms withVirgin Atlantic president Richard Branson to put a green twist on the airline’s signature red uniforms. More than 7,500 of Virgin’s employees, including cabin crew, pilots, Clubhouse staff, and Virgin Holidays personnel, will don the redesigned ensembles, which will receive a trial run from July 2013 before their official rollout in 2014. Several elements of the new uniforms, according to Virgin Atlantic officials, will comprise recycled materials, including a recycled-polyester yarn derived from discarded plastic bottles. The airline says it’s developing all items with closed-loop recycling in mind, meaning that worn uniforms will be reprocessed into fibers to be woven into new clothing.
Westwood says she sought to create a “futuristic look” that captured the glamour and style for which the Virgin Atlantic cabin crew are renowned.
